TESTIMONIALS
My Journey with The Haven of Love
My name is Brianna, and I arrived at The Haven of Love in March 2024. From the moment I walked through the doors, I was met with love and the undeniable presence of God. The program offered a six-month to one-year transition period, and after my first 30 days, I had the opportunity to attend training with RBC. This training prepared me for work in the warehouse industry and even provided a second-chance job opportunity with the City of Dallas.
After securing a job, my primary goal was to reunite with my children, who were staying with their aunt, and find a stable place for us to live. I worked diligently for six months, and after completing my time at The Haven of Love, I was able to get my own apartment. Shortly after, I regained custody of my children.
The Haven of Love continued to support me even after I left, helping me furnish my apartment and providing food assistance. It was a truly life-changing experience, and I knew without a doubt that God’s hand was in it all. Today, my children and I are living together again as a family, and I am employed by the City of Dallas.
I am beyond grateful for God’s favor in my life and for the safe haven that The Haven of Love provided after my release from prison. Most of all, I want to thank Miss Karen and The Haven of Love Transitional Women’s Home for their unwavering support, guidance, and the covering they provided during my journey to restoration.

My Journey with The Haven of Love
Hi, my name is Valerie. I first met Miss Karen Green while I was in Dallas County Jail, where she facilitated The Haven of Love’s Healthy Relationships class. I was incarcerated for six months, and upon my release, I returned to my family. However, I remained connected to The Haven of Love through their aftercare program.
The support groups, held on the first and third Tuesdays, along with Bible study on the second and fourth Saturdays, have been a tremendous source of strength for me since my release. This program has provided me with encouragement, guidance, and a community of women who uplift one another.
Now, eight months after my release, I have the privilege of giving back as a volunteer. I arrive early to help set up for the groups, stay to support others, and share my testimony when given the opportunity. I am so grateful for The Haven of Love’s reentry program, which provides women like me with a safe space filled with love, support, and the presence of God.
I thank the Lord for The Haven of Love and the impact it has on our community. It truly means so much to women like myself.
– Valerie 🙂

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dallas Woman’s Redemption Story Becomes Lifeline for Hundreds of Women
The Haven of Love Hosts Their Annual “There Is Hope” Fundraiser Luncheon This May to Help Women Overcome the Unthinkable
DALLAS, TX – March 26, 2025 – The year was 1999 and Karen Green was watching a woman being walked into the prison. The woman looked familiar. Karen knew that she had seen her somewhere before. She searched her memory for a few more seconds, and then her heart sank as it hit her: She’d seen this woman a few weeks ago right here, serving time in this very prison… and here she was returning. Karen felt deeply empathetic for the woman and thought “Lord, you’ve gotta send someone to tell these ladies that they can live a better life outside these prison walls.” It was at this moment, as Karen sat in her own prison cell, that she felt a higher power call upon her. She decided right then that she would surrender her life to Christ, thus setting a chain of events into motion. What could have been the end of Karen’s story became the beginning of her calling—one that would go on to elevate the trajectory of the lives of hundreds of vulnerable women and at-risk youth across Texas.
Karen saw firsthand just how critical the need for support programs was. They need support programs that actually respond to and address the plight of women and at-risk youth who have been caught in the cycle of prostitution, drug abuse, domestic violence and incarceration. Female inmates with access to support programs inside and/or outside of the correctional facility run a much lower risk of reoffending and returning to jail. For example, data from Dallas’s Prostitution Diversion Initiative (PDI) showed that over half of untreated women returned to prostitution, while program participants were 65% more likely to have no new arrests, according to another PDI report.
After being released from prison, women are faced with the uphill battle that is reintegrating back into society. With the risk of them reoffending at this point being so high, it’s clear that there is a need for a strong support system that teaches them that there is a healthier and more functional way to live. This can be especially difficult because most of these women and girls come from families where abuse of some sort was common. This cycle of trauma is called generational trauma, because it affects generation after generation unless someone puts a stop to it. When you consider that 81% of incarcerated women in Texas are mothers, and over 65% of those mothers were the primary caregivers before going to prison, it becomes clear how big the generational trauma cycle issue is.
The statistics: There is a strong correlation between negative/traumatic childhood experiences (like abuse, neglect, or growing up with an incarcerated parent) and entry into the sex trade. A study found that, with each additional childhood traumatic event, the odds of engaging in prostitution as an adult grow by about 19%. Here in Texas, a similar study found that 58% of incarcerated women in Texas reported being sexually abused or assaulted as children.
Shortly after her release, Karen started a small, grassroots charitable organization and began addressing these issues right away. And today, The Haven of Love is a well established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that, under their founder and executive director’s leadership, has earned the right to teach and mentor women in prisons and treatment centers. They work with women (and recently started working with men) in Dallas County’s Lou Sterrett Jail and in the Gatesville and Henderson Women’s Correctional Facilities. They also offer classes as well as transitional housing at “The Haven House”. By offering these services, classes and opportunities, The Haven of Love has given hope to so many people in their community. Recently the organization branched out to include male volunteers ministering to men in the prison ministry program, but Karen says that The Haven of Love’s mission remains the same as it was on day one.
“Our vision is to provide support and stability to women in recovery and to assist women returning to society from the prison system through social service assistance, educational programming and economic empowerment. Our goal is to give these women the ability to move forward from a position of dependency to self-sufficiency. We want to empower them to restore stability in their lives as they return to society and to their families.” – Maci Lanier, Board Secretary for The Haven of Love
On Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., The Haven of Love will host its annual “There Is Hope” Fundraiser Luncheon at the Hotel Swexan in Dallas’ Harwood District. This high-impact event will bring together community leaders, philanthropists, business owners, and faith-based supporters to raise funds and awareness for a mission rooted in love, truth, and transformation.
“I was once one of the women Haven of Love now serves,” said Karen Green. “I know what it means to be lost, broken, and overlooked. I also know what it means to be restored. That’s why I do what I do—because there is hope.”
From her time facilitating weekly ministry in Dallas County jails, to working hand-in-hand with law enforcement through the Prostitute Diversion Initiative, Green’s work has earned her national attention and numerous accolades—including the “Women Who Make a Difference” award and the “Silent No More” award for advocacy against sexual violence. But Karen would be the first to say it’s not about the awards—it’s about the women. Through counseling, recovery support, transitional housing, and biblical mentorship, The Haven of Love offers women more than just temporary assistance—it offers them a new life.
As part of the lead-up to the luncheon, Haven of Love is also launching a state-wide call to action titled “Untold Stories.” The campaign invites women across Texas who have overcome adversity—whether addiction, incarceration, trafficking, or abuse—to share their stories of strength and survival. These testimonials will be featured at the luncheon and online to raise awareness and build solidarity.
This is not just another fundraiser. This is a movement—and everyone is invited to take part.
